How to Create a Screenshot

There are many ways to create a screenshot file. We’ll cover three ways here, all built into Windows and free.

1) Use the newer windows snip & sketch tool

Start the Windows Snip & Sketch tool by searching for “snip” in the start menu.  Click “Snip & Sketch” to launch the tool.

Click New and then click and hold and then drag to highlight the region of your screen to capture.  Your captured region will be pasted into the windows clipboard and into the snipping tool’s window.

You can then:

– Paste the image you see into an email – use the key combination Ctrl-V or right click and choose Paste, if available.

– Edit the image with the highlighter or other tools offered.

– Save the image as a file.

2) Use the windows snipping tool

Start the Windows Snipping tool by searching for “snip” in the start menu. Click “Snipping Tool” to launch the tool.

Click New and then click and hold and then drag to highlight the region of your screen to capture.  Your captured region will be pasted into the windows clipboard and into the snipping tool’s window.

You can then:

– Paste the image you see into an email – use the key combination Ctrl-V or right click and choose Paste, if available.

– Edit the image with the highlighter or other tools offered.

– Save the image as a file.

3) Use Print Screen and Windows Paint.

To take a screenshot of your entire Windows Desktop, click the Print Screen button on your keyboard. This copies an image of your desktop to the Windows clipboard. Next, launch the Windows Paint utility and then click the Paste button or use the key combination Ctrl-V to paste. From there you can optionally crop the image and save it as a file.
